Kalamazoo Passed away unexpectedly Saturday, October 20, 2007 at his home. Gene was born April 26, 1928 in Kalamazoo, the son of Russell and Mabel Ramstein Howard and had been a lifelong resident of the area. He graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1946 and was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church of Portage. He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Gene enjoyed fishing, reading, working in the yard and had a great sense of humor. He loved his family, especially his 11 grandsons and was proud of their accomplishments. For over 40 years, he worked for the US Postal System. On October 13, 1956, Gene married the former Margaret ?Margo? Conroy, who survives. Also surviving are their children, Nancy Mike Labus of Portage, Joe Deanna Howard of Sausalito, CA, Rick Jennifer Howard of Wheaton, IL and Paul Howard of Portage; his 11 grandsons, Alex, Nicholas and Austin Labus, Matt, Jake, Andrew, Daniel and Patrick Howard, Colin, Evan and Ryan Howard; a brother, Lewis Barbara Howard of Kalamazoo; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, James Howard. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10:30 AM in St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, 1150 W. Centre Ave. with Rev. Fr. Kevin Covert, celebrant. The family will receive friends at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre Ave. on Tuesday from 5-8 PM.
