Formerly of Kalamazoo, MI Passed away Thursday afternoon July 19, 2012 in Hastings, Michigan at Thornapple Manor with her family at her side. Emily was born June 7, 1916 in Kalamazoo, Michigan the daughter of James and Emily Littlewood Hackenberg. She grew up in Allegan where she graduated high school in 1935. Emily worked at the Kalamazoo State Hospital and lngersolls during WWII. She also worked at W.T. Grants until retirement in 1974. Emily was married in Laporte, Indiana to Wyllis C. Hughes in 1946 who preceded her in death on July 8, 1987. She was also preceded by a daughter, Sonia Kretz; and a sister, Ellen Francis Parrish. Emily was a Kalamazoo area resident most of her life where she raised her children. She is survived by children, Frederick Hughes of Kalamazoo and TheodoreCherie Hughes of Hastings; 5 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, James Hackenberg of Kalamazoo; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Emily was a devoted and loving mother and enjoyed golf, Tiger Baseball, playing the piano, and socializing with family and friends. A memorial service will be held 2 o'clock Saturday, July 28th at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 South 9th St. Friends may meet the family one hour prior to the service at the chapel. Private burial will take place in Mt. Ever-Rest Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be directed to Thornapple Manor, Hastings. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her!! Our mother is gone, but God has gained an Angel.
