Climax Eleanor Margaret Smith passed away peacefully, Sunday, March 6, at the Laurels of Bedford, where she had resided since September 2009. Eleanor was born June 7, 1917 in Barry County to Charles and Eva Nidy. In 1940, she was united in marriage to Richard Simmons, who preceded her in death in 1955. She became a mother to Ronald "Buddy" in 1941 and Sandra in 1942, was the best Grandma to Kim, Cindy, Kris, Brenda, Kevin and Brian, a great grandmother to 12 with one on the way, and great great grandmother to 5, all of whom she adored and all of whom survive her. Her family was her greatest source of joy and pride. She was affectionately known as Granny to everyone else. She participated in several community events, such as Founders Day and the Community Association. She was a member of the Climax United Methodist Church and very active with the UMW, serving as the President. She helped prepare funeral lunches for the community and served lunch to the Rotary Club meetings for over 62 years. She was also a 4-H leader and judge for over 30 years, teaching many, many young people the true joy of cooking. She received many honors recognizing her talents, including the Paul Harris Award and the Golden Trowel Award, both from the Rotarians. She was preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Sharon Simmons and a son-in-law, Merlin Smith. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11:00 AM in the Climax United Methodist Church, 133 E. Maple St., with Pastor Glenn Litchfield officiating. Interment will follow at Prairie Home Cemetery, Climax. The family will receive friends at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Climax Chapel, 205 E. Maple on Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM.
