9/29/2007 Went to be with her Heavenly Father on Saturday, September 29, 2007. Elaine was born in Grand Rapids, MI on January 5, 1930, the eldest child of Corneal and Alida Bestervelt Egberts. A graduate of Kalamazoo Central High School, Elaine attended Western Michigan University. While attending WMU, Elaine met the love of her life, John H. Nelson, and they were united in marriage on March 2, 1951. She was employed by The Upjohn Company, working as a part of a research team exploring a vaccine for tuberculosis. Upon the arrival of her first child, Elaine embarked on her journey as a full time mom and homemaker. Elaine was a Girl Scout troop leader, Sunday School teacher and enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Europe with her husband. Elaine loved being with her family and cherished the title of ?Grandma?. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband John and sister Shirley Egberts Langeland. Survivors include two daughters, Janis Robert English of Kalamazoo and Kathleen Nelson of Portage, grandsons Benjamin and J.T. English of Kalamazoo, brothers Jack Connie Egberts of Kalamazoo, Larry Donna Egberts of Huntington Beach, CA, as well as many other members of her extended family. Cremation has taken place with private inurnment of remains to take place at a later date. A Memorial Service will be held at Second Reformed Church, 2323 Stadium Drive, on Monday, October 8, 2007 at 11:00 AM with her pastor, Reverend Ralph Robrahn officiating. Friends may meet with the family on Sunday, October 7, 2007 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes Westside Chapel, 3926 S. 9th Street, and at the church one hour prior to the start of the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to the Western Michigan University Foundation, designated for the men?s ice hockey program, Kalamazoo Area Math & Science Center, or Second Reformed Church.
