TOREN, Edo ?Ed? Kalamazoo Mr. Toren passed away Thursday afternoon, May 24, 2007 at Woodhills Assisted Living Community. He was born October 18, 1909 in Winschoten, The Netherlands, one of six children to Luppo and Ettiena Geuken Toren. Prior to immigrating to the United States in 1957, Edo served in the Dutch military during World War II. On November 7, 1936, he was united in marriage to Annie Bakker in The Netherlands. Ed owned and operated Always Barber Shop in downtown Kalamazoo for many years. Following its closing, he continued to barber until he retired in his mid 70?s. He was a member of Third Reformed Church for many years. Surviving are his two children, Minnie Bert Meinema, and Luppo ?Dan? Karren Toren both of Kalamazoo; four grandchildren, Michelle Bob Hammond, Chris Dave Jager, Teresa Meinema, and Shanda Todd Middleton; ten great-grandchildren, Megan, Christina, Trevor, Logan, Austin, Ashleigh, Andrew, Makayla, Mariah, and Braylen; and several nieces and nephews in the US and The Netherlands. Preceding him in death are his wife, Annie Toren in 1982; his parents; two brothers; and three sisters. A special thank-you is expressed to the staff at Woodhills, Heartland Hospice, and close friend Bill Baker, who visited Ed regularly. Funeral services for Mr. Toren will be at 11:00 AM on Wednesday at Third Reformed Church, 2345 N. 10th Street, with Rev. Darwin VanderWal officiating. Friends may visit with the family on Wednesday morning from 10:00 AM until the time of services at church. Interment will be in Grand Prairie Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be directed to Woodhills Assisted Living Community, Heartland Hospice, or Third Reformed Church.
