Of Kalamazoo, Michigan Dr. Muiznieks died unexpectedly on Friday, July 10, 2009 enroute home from the East Coast. He was born December 1, 1927 in Rugaji, Latvia, the son of Aleksandrs and Beatrise Muiznieks. Dr. Muiznieks immigrated to the United States with his mother and 4 siblings in 1949. In 1950, he moved to Chicago and in 1959 to Kalamazoo. He was a practicing doctor of Chiropractic from 1959 until his retirement earlier this year. Dr. Muiznieks was an active member of the American Latvian Association, Daugavas Vanagi , Fraternity Valdemarija, Latvian Evangelical Lutheran United Church of Kalamazoo, and other Latvian organizations. He also served on several local and national chiropractic boards. He is remembered for his work with Western Michigan University WMU in the development of the Latvian language program, and was a recipient of an Honorary Doctorate from WMU in 1985. In 1996, Dr. Valdis Muiznieks received from the President of Latvia the prestigious award "The Tris Zvaigznu Ordenis" for his lifelong work with the Latvian Community in the U.S.A. Surviving are his wife, Lalita Muizniece; their 2 children, Zintis Muiznieks of Callicoon, NY and Sarma Janis Muiznieks Liepins of Boxford, MA; 2 grandsons, Julijs and Peteris; 1 sister, Velta George Anast of WI; 1 brother, Maris Marita Muiznieks of TX; sister-in-law, Guna Muiznieks; and several nieces, nephews, and other extended family in the U.S.A. and Latvia. Preceding him in death were his parents and 2 brothers, Imants and Andrejs Muiznieks. Funeral services for Dr. Muiznieks will be at 11:00 AM on Tuesday at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick Street, Kalamazoo, with Rev. Leons Viksne officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 6-8 PM on Monday at the funeral home.
