NIEMI, Dr. Leo
Of Kalamazoo Dr. Leo Niemi, PhD, age 92 years, died peacefully in his home on Friday, March 2, 2012. He was born on February 27, 1920 in Champion, Michigan. Leo was a veteran of the Untied States Army. He met Betty Wallus at Fort Custer, where he was stationed at the beginning of WWII and they were united in marriage on December 26, 1942. Leo earned his PhD in Business from Ohio State University. He was a Professor of Business at Western Michigan University. Leo was avid fisherman and hunter; he enjoyed being a world traveler with his wife Betty. He spent his winters as a snowbird at Harbor Isles in North Port Florida. Surviving are his loving wife of 70 years, Elizabeth Niemi; brother, Rev. Wayne Erika Niemi and sister, Pearl Pelto. Leo was a special uncle and role model to many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews and cousins of the Long, Niemi and Pelto families. A graveside ceremony with military honors will be held at 11:00 am on Friday at Fort Custer National Cemetery, 15501 Dickman Road, Augusta. Memorial contributions can be in honor of Leo to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan.
