DR. STIEGLITZ, M.A.T., M.D., Lawrence Delong
of Kalamazoo, MI Died January 12, 2014 at age 89. Lawrence was born October 25, 1924 in Milford, IN to the late Henry and Anne Zimmerman Stieglitz. He was united in marriage to Ruth Marilyn Fogle on June 10, 1951 in Indiana. Lawrence, known as Larry was the first of six brothers to go into the military where he served as an Army Medic during WWII. When he returned from being stationed in Candy, Ceylon Sri Lanka, he pushed all his brothers to get a college education. Jim and John were able to go through university with the GI Bill. So strongly did Larry believe in education that when his wife Marilyn finished her teaching degree, she said he took her by the hand to go register for a Master's degree! When he returned from the army, he worked hard on the family farm to get water piped into the barn so that his father would not have to carry buckets of water back and forth morning and night. He graduated from Indiana University and taught high school biology for a year, then went back to Medical School receiving a medical degree specializing in child psychiatry. Larry worked at Women's Hospital in Detroit until they moved to Kalamazoo. Larry worked at the Child Guidance Clinic until he took a position at the State Hospital. He later took a position working with adolescents in the Pheasant Ridge adolescent unit of the State Hospital. Larry loved helping people and whether it was through psychiatry, his love for farming, or his love for God, his motivation was to make the world a better place one person at a time. He was active in the First United Methodist Church of Kalamazoo actively striving to be involved in the life of anyone in need. Larry modeled the Golden Rule in treating others the way he would want to be treated. This was the legacy he left to those who knew him. Larry was a devoted family man placing the needs of others over his own. His family knew that if they ever needed something often without even asking he was there. Lawrence is survived by his wife, Ruth Marilyn Stieglitz; children, Lary Cindy Stieglitz, Darwin Stieglitz, Christopher Frances Stieglitz and Jonathan Debra Stieglitz; 8 grandchildren; siblings, Harley Elizabeth, William Beverly, John and James Stieglitz, Elizabeth Jack Scruggs, Rosemary John Zook, FrancesEric Schiller and Ruth John Hooley; and many nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by a brother, George Stieglitz. Funeral service will be held Wednesday January 22, 11:30 at the First United Methodist Church, Kalamazoo, where family will greet friends for one hour prior to the service. Following refreshments at FUMC, interment will be at 2:30 in Ft. Custer National Cemetery with military honors.
