OVERBEY, Charles Brown Jr. M.D. Kalamazoo, Michigan Passed away Thursday afternoon, December 11, 2008 at Friendship Village. He was born December 3, 1915, in Mangum, OK, the son of Charles, Sr. and Mary Thompson Overbey. Charles received his Medical Degree from the University of Oklahoma. He married Helen Timberlake in October 1942. He served 4 ½ years in the Army Medical Corp during WW II, in the Asian-Pacific Theatre, and was discharged as a Captain in 1946. Charles completed his Psychiatric Residency and worked at the Kalamazoo State Hospital for 25 years, retiring in 1974 as the Assistant Medical Superintendent. He then opened a private practice at Bronson Hospital for 20 years retiring in 1985. Capping his career, he worked as a Medical Consultant at Disability Determination Services, until his third retirement at the age of 92. Dr. Overbey was respected and esteemed by his peers and patients as a skilled and caring physician. Charles was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Kalamazoo and served on many boards and committees. He was a long standing member of the Kalamazoo Academy of Medicine and a Life Fellow in the American Psychiatric Association. He was involved in many community activities and served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Kalamazoo Savings and Loan. He is survived by his wife Helen; three children, Ann O. DeZwarte of Kalamazoo, Charles B. Overbey, III of East Lansing and Mary O. Cheney of Alden; two grandchildren, Phillip Jennifer DeZwarte and Carol John Walters DeZwarte; and one sister Mary Jo Guilfoyle, of Overland Park, KS. Preceding him in death were his parents, two brothers and two sisters. Private interment will be at Mount Ever-Rest Memorial Park. Memorial services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, December 19, at the First Congregational Church, 129 South Park Street, with Rev. Matthew Laney officiating. Following this service, family and friends are invited to the Friendship Village Kiva at 3:30 p.m. to celebrate his life. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be directed to the First Congregational Church Memorial Fund or the Friendship Village Woods Fund.
