Dotti Ochala, aged 92, of Kalamazoo, MI, passed away on April 29, 2024. She was born on August 16, 1931, in Detroit, MI. She was a graduate of Pershing High School in Detroit and held an Associate Degree from Schoolcraft College in Early Childhood Development. Dotti was known for her infectious laughter and love for lively gatherings. She was a dedicated advocate for justice and took pride in her involvement with Citizens for Peace in Livonia. Her early interests included Romanian music and dance, which helped to foster her love of dancing in her adult life. She also enjoyed sewing and produced many special dresses and outfits for her family. She was an avid sports fan and participant. She enjoyed skiing, golf, tennis, basketball, walking, and exercising.
Dotti’s warm and welcoming nature made her a cherished friend, a faithful companion, and a devoted family member.
Dotti worked for many years outside of the home. As her children grew older, she returned to the workforce in the bookkeeping field and in a variety of retail positions. She used her early childhood degree experience to work as an assistant with before and after school elementary programs.
Dotti is survived by her children, Ron Ochala (Ilene Kelton), Debra Hulsey (Rick Hulsey), Patti Ochala; and grandchildren, Allegra Hulsey, Hannah Hulsey, Dylan Ochala Gorka (Kelsie Michelson); her sister, Eleanor Gruich; and her sister-in-law, Anita Burak.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Casmer Ochala; her parents, Anna and George Burak; her brothers, George Burak (Evelyn Burak), Tom Burak; and her brother-in-law, Tom Gruich.
Dotti's legacy of love, laughter, and togetherness will be deeply cherished by all who knew her. She was a wonderful grandmother and a very special "Auntie"! Her love of Sander’s Cream Puff Hot Fudge Sundae was legendary!
The family extends their gratitude to the caregivers at Bronson Commons and Centrica Hospice Care for their unwavering support and compassion.
Interment will take place Friday, August 16, at 2:00pm at Holy Sepulchre Catholic Cemetery, 25800 W 10 Mile Rd, Southfield, MI 48033.
A Celebration of Life will take place Saturday, August 17, 2024, at 1:00pm at the Universalist Unitarian Church of Farmington, 25301 Halsted Rd, Farmington Hills, MI 48335. A Memorial Mass will be delivered in her honor on Sunday, August 18, 2024, at 12:00pm at St. Gerald’s Catholic Church, 21300 Farmington Rd, Farmington, MI 48336.
