Dorothy M. Nelson

It is with great sadness that the family of Dorothy Nelson (Houseman) announce her passing on October 2, 2024, at the age of 88. Dorothy peacefully passed away at Heritage Assisted Living in Battle Creek, Michigan, surrounded by loving caregivers and family.

She was born February 14, 1936, to Henry and Beth Houseman. Dorothy married Jerry Nelson in 1960, and he preceded her in passing in 1966. She was a graduate of Decatur High School and received her master’s degree in education from Western Michigan University. She taught for 29 years at Decatur Public Schools. Dorothy lived a full life as a loving mother and a friend to all who met her. She enjoyed watching the Detroit Tigers, reading, gardening, and feeding the birds.

Dorothy is survived by her two sons, Jeffrey (Nancy) Nelson, James (Rose) Nelson; brother, Lewis Houseman; grandchildren, Stephen, Thomas, Jennifer, John, Jackie, Katie, Kristine, Michael; great grandchildren, Rylee, Emery, and Ari.

Preceding her in passing are her parents, husband, and her siblings, Elsie Fleming, and Frank Houseman.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, October 12, 2024, 11am, at New Hope Community Church, 319 1/2 West Delaware Street, Decatur, Michigan 49045.
