Donna F. Heurlin

Donna F. Heurlin, age 75 of Kalamazoo formerly of Chicago, died at home under hospice care on January 8, 2024. She was born on December 24, 1948, in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Joseph and Frances (Cimino) Scafuri, Jr. Donna was a 1966 graduate of Proviso West High School. She worked at Kodak and was an optician for many years. She enjoyed working at Payless Shoe Source and loved that her children worked at a Payless at some point in their careers also. A job transfer, for her then husband, in 1991 brought Donna to the Kalamazoo area.

Donna was fiercely proud of children and grandchildren. Jennifer and Victor both skated at very high levels of competition in their respective sports (figure skating and hockey). Post their amateur careers, you could always find Donna attending Jennifer and Victor’s coaching events, as she was their biggest fan. She was a fixture in the rink for many years! But her biggest joy in life was being “Grammie” to her two “beautiful grandbabies” (as she called them), Natalie and Jordan. She would brag to anyone who would listen about their figure skating and musical talents.

In her last days, the nurses caring for her called her the “spicy little Italian lady”, which was so fitting as she was very proud of her heritage. Donna loved her children, grandchildren, and friends very deeply. She always made room for those who needed a place to go and will always be remembered for her big heart and sassy personality. Her family includes her children: Jen Heurlin (Eric Yetter) and Victor Heurlin (Danielle Kramer); her granddaughters: Natalie and Jordan Brenne; her brother Frederick “Rick” (Carlene) Scafuri; and nephew Brian Scafuri.
