Kalamazoo, MI Passed away Saturday morning March 6, 2010. Don was born July 27, 1925 in Kalamazoo, Michigan a son of George and Elsie Timm Bertch. During WWII, he served with the U.S. Army. On June 1, 1947, he was united in marriage to Phyllis L. Porter Bertch and was a lifelong Kalamazoo resident. He was an avid musician playing string bass for over 60 years with many area bands. He also enjoyed gardening, woodcarving and nature. Don was a member of the Westwood United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Durwood and Dale. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; son, Jeff Bev Bertch of Kalamazoo; 3 grandchildren, Scott Kelly Bertch, Carrie Bertch, and Laurie Alan Woodstra; 2 great-grandchildren, Collin and Emelia Bertch; a sister, Joyce Esman of Kalamazoo; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Graveside services will be held 1 o'clock Wednesday in Grand Prairie Cemetery. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Rose Arbor Hospice Program.
