Don L. Grantham, Sr.

November 2, 1949 — February 2, 2025

Portage

Don Lee Grantham, Sr., 75, of Portage, Michigan, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2025. Born on November 2, 1949, in South Bend, Indiana, Don lived a life marked by dedication to his family, service to his country, and a deep appreciation for the outdoors.

A proud Vietnam War veteran, Don served with extraordinary courage and resilience. He was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained during his service—a testament to his bravery and sacrifice. Upon returning home, he built a long and fulfilling career with the railroad, where his hard work and commitment were evident until his well-earned retirement.

In retirement, Don embraced life fully. He found immense joy in spending time with family and friends and pursuing his passion for fishing. Whether casting a line on local Michigan lakes or enjoying the serenity of nature, fishing with his best friend, KC, was one of Don’s greatest pleasures. He also cherished hosting gatherings with his wife Carolyn, creating lasting memories through their annual fish fries that brought loved ones together. Don was also a lifelong fan of Notre Dame football and enjoyed cheering on The Fighting Irish.

Don is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn Grantham; his children: Don Grantham (Heather), Melissa Heine (Brian), Tim Grantham, and Chris Grantham; and five grandchildren: Justin, Ryan, Elizabeth, Brianna, and Austin. He is also survived by stepchildren Dave Harrison (Jodi) and Billy Harrison (Chris); step-grandchildren Chelsea Eldred (Bob), Josh Harrison (Rachel), Ava Harrison-Burri; and step-great-grandchildren Forrest and Eleanor. Don was predeceased by his parents James Grantham Sr. and Mary Krochmal; and his brother James Grantham Jr.

A funeral service to honor Don's life will be held on Thursday March 20, 2025, at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, Michigan. The service will begin at 1:30 p.m. at 15501 Dickman Road. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Don’s remarkable life and pay their respects.

May Don’s memory bring comfort to all who knew him as they reflect on a life well-lived and deeply loved.
