Kalamazoo, MI Died Saturday morning, May 1, 2010. Derek was born November 21, 1930 in Bolton, England a son of Dennis and Doris Hardy Clayton. He had been a Kalamazoo area resident since 1974 and was employed with Bronson Hospital for 10 years. He then worked at Prudential Nursery with his dear friends, Charlie and Cindy Krill for another 20 years before retiring. Derek was also a past president of the Suburban Kiwanis Club. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a daughter, Karen Speelman in 2005. On April 18, 1981, he was united in marriage to Edna Hammer-Clayton who survives. Also surviving, 2 daughters, Chris Jack Peake and Judy Hammer all of Kalamazoo; a son-in-law, Gary Speelman of Battle Creek; 3 grandchildren, Marcy Peake, Dan Nemire, and David Speelman; and 2 great-grandchildren, Autumn and Austin Nemire. A memorial service will be held 11 o'clock Thursday from the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 S. 9th St. Friends may meet the family one hour prior to the service at the chapel.
