MEREDITH, Deane W.
Of Portage, Michigan Passed away Friday, April 11, 2008 at Bronson Hospital. Deane was born September 22, 1925 in Alma, MI to the late William and Freda Behler Meredith. He was united in marriage to Mildred Dent on September 29, 1951 in Midland, MI. Deane served with the United States Army as a medic in the Philippines during World War II. After completing his service, Deane graduated from Michigan State University as a Forester and then began a 35 year career with the US Department of Agriculture, Soil Conservation Service. He was a life member of Masonic Lodge 273, F. & A.M., served on the Portage Environmental Board, and was a member of the Second Reformed Church since 1981.
Deane especially enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling, camping, hunting and fishing. After retirement, he developed an interest in woodworking. Surviving him are his wife, Mildred Meredith; children, Janice Campbell of Portage, Brian Gwen Meredith of South Haven, MI and JoAnn Joe Bennett of Chelsea, MI; three grandchildren, Laura, Chris and Shannon Campbell; brothers-in-law, Wilford Virgina C. Dent and Duane Nancy Dent; sister-in-law, Marian Roberts. There will be a visitation at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 East Centre Ave., Portage, on Wednesday, the 16th, from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Services will be held on Thursday, the 17th at 11:00 a.m., at Second Reformed Church, 2323 Stadium Dr., Kalamazoo, MI 49008. Rev. Ralph Robrahn will officiate the services. Interment will follow at Ft. Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, MI. Memorial contributions may be directed to Second Reformed Church or the Nature Conservancy of Michigan.
