MILLER, David A.
of Kalamazoo, Michigan Dave passed away Wednesday morning, April 11, 2012 at Bronson Methodist Hospital. He was born May 10, 1939 in Sturgis, MI, the son of the late Robert B. and Gertrude Schroeder Miller. Growing up in Athens, Dave graduated as class president of the Athens High School in 1957. He attended Battle Creek Community College, Western Michigan University and completed his electrical engineering degree in Chicago. He was an accomplished bandsman playing the saxophone and clarinet and also attended school at Interlochen Center for the Arts. In 1962, he began work for Michigan Bell AT&T in Chicago. In 1963, Dave was drafted into the United States Army and was in the 5th Army Band at Fort Knox. On June 1, 1963, he was united in marriage to the former Nancy Strye, and they moved to Kalamazoo in 1964. He continued working for AT&T for 25 years and also worked for Bell Federal Credit Union where he was the C.E.O. for 43 years until his retirement in 2009. Dave became very active in the credit union movement. He was active chairman for 6 years in the Michigan State Association of Credit Unions. Dave was elected to the board of the National Association of Federal Credit Unions NAFCU where he served as chairman for 12 years and treasurer for 3 years. Dave was also on the Credit Acceptance Corporation CAC as a representative to the federal reserve board where he became very involved in political action in Washington D.C. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting, and shooting at the Southern Michigan Gun Club. Dave also loved fishing with his 3 sons, collecting and working on automobiles. Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Nancy Miller; their 3 sons, Robert Miller of Kalamazoo, Paul Michelle Miller of Troy and Jason Miller of Kalamazoo; grandson, Nolan Miller; 2 sisters, Bette Dick Nuzum of St. Louis, MO and Patricia Russ Decker of East Leroy; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Dave will be Sunday today at 5:00 pm at St. Michael Lutheran Church, 7211 Oakland Drive, with Pastor John Reusch of Cross of Christ Church, Bloomfield Hills. Friends may visit with the family from 1-4 pm and 6-8 pm on Saturday at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 S. 9th Street, Kalamazoo. Private interment will be in Burr Oak Cemetery, Athens. Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Heart Association or St. Michael Lutheran Church.
