Portage Conrad passed away early Wednesday morning, October 24, 2007 at his home with his family by his side. He was born March 31, 1929 in Tipton, IN, one of four children to the late Ralph and H. Louise Johnson Burket. Conrad was a veteran of the Untied States Army serving during the Korean Conflict and earning himself the rank of Corporal. He was employed by Hydreco, Inc. for 31 years until his retirement in 1990; and also owned and operated a family fruit farm. Mr. Burket was a member of Southridge Reformed Church and was a former Boy Scout Leader. In his spare time, he enjoyed golfing, woodworking, carving, painting, fishing, and gardening. On August 26, 1950, he was united in marriage to Barbara Grenier in Mt. Morris, who survives. Also surviving are their four children, Michael Donna Burket of Gaylord, Susan Larry Reeves of Schoolcraft, David Burket of Traverse City, and Barbara Matthew Loveland of Charlestown, IN; five grandchildren, Michael Miller of Texas Twp., Lindsey Tom DenHarder of Schoolcraft, Joshua and Jacob Loveland of Charlestown, IN, and Zachary Burket of Orlando, FL; three sisters, Marilyn VanderMolen of Holland, Sharron Schultz of Kalamazoo, and Diane Belonga of Kalamazoo; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death are his parents, and one infant brother, Marshall Burket. Funeral services for Mr. Burket will be at 2:00 PM on Saturday at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 S. 9th Street, with Rev. Mark A. Vanderson officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Ever-Rest Memorial Park. Friends may visit with the family from 1:00 PM until the time of services on Saturday at the funeral home.
