SWEARINGEN, Clyde H.
Of Portage, MI Passed away on February 25, 2009 with his family by his side. Clyde was born January 21, 1928 in Jacksonville, FL, a son of Heenan and Clyde Leora Johnston and had lived in the Kalamazoo/Portage area for most of his life. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He received his Bachelors Degree and a Masters in Education from Western Michigan University and prior to his retirement in 1988 he taught for 38 years in the Portage Public Schools. Clyde was a member of the Oakwood Bible Church. He was an active member of the National and Michigan Education Associations and was recognized in the Who's Who of American Teachers. Clyde was actively involved for 30 years with the Boy Scouts of America and was presented with the prestigious Silver Beaver Award for his service. One of the most precious enjoyments in his life was the numerous trips he made with his Boy Scout Troop to Philmont, NM and at another time took his troop for a month long caravan trip to Alaska. Clyde was preceded in death by a son Michael Swearingen, a granddaughter Brenda Johnson and a brother Albert Edwards. On January 20, 1951, Clyde was married to Marian L. Yerke, who survives. Also surviving are children, Steven Tammy Swearingen of Tennessee, Suzanne Joseph Burke of Connecticut, Lori Craig Campbell of Portage, Denny Debbie Johnson of Vicksburg and Bob Sue Johnson of Montana; a daughter-in-law Eloise Swearingen of Big Rapids, MI; 9 grandchildren, Rebecca, Derek, Christina, Joseph, Kathleen, James, Skylar, Hailey and Josh. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre Ave. with Pastor Bill Kiewit officiating. Friends may meet the family beginning at 10 am Monday at the Portage Chapel. The family suggests that memorial contributions in Clyde's memory be made to the Boy Scouts of America or Hospice Care of S.W. Michigan. Please visit online at
