NYCE, Dr. Clarence B.
Kalamazoo, MI Clarence B. Nyce, M.D. died Saturday morning, February 13, 2010. He was born July 5, 1923 in Telford, Pennsylvania; son of Henry and Mae Barndt Nyce. He attended Muhlenberg College and was drafted for WW II after his first year. The Army sent him to Auburn University to study engineering for a year, and then on to Vanderbilt for pre-medical training as part of the Army Medical Corp. After a year at Vanderbilt, he was sent to Ohio State University's Medical School, from which he received his degree in 1948. Although WW II was over by then, he was drafted for a second time during the Korean War, and served as a doctor in both California and Alaska. After his tenure in the military, he established his residence in North Baltimore, Ohio where he was a doctor for the town and the surrounding community for twenty-five years. He served for many years on the North Baltimore Board of Education, the last 12 years as its President; and was an active member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church. He had privileges at both Bowling Green and Findlay Hospitals. During his twenty five years in Ohio, he was a beloved physician; available anytime day or night, and always willing to come to a bedside. He was truly missed when he moved to Kalamazoo, Michigan. He came to Kalamazoo in 1974 to join the Westside Family Medical Clinic where he practiced for another twenty five years. Clancy was on the Staff at both Bronson and Borgess Hospitals and was a member of the Medical Society. He spent time as a member of the Faculty of the Michigan State University Medical School working with Residents at the local hospitals. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church. Clancy is lovingly remembered, not only by his family, but by all who ever met him. He was an uncommonly gentle, patient soul. He was generous of spirit and compassionate towards all he encountered. He was highly respected by all who knew him and will always be thought of as someone who embodied the true spirit of what medicine should be - intelligent, compassionate, patient, faithful, and healing; with a wonderful sense of humor. His children will remember his stories and his gentle, caring nature. He met Marilyn M. Brown Nyce through her brother Robert, his Medical School roommate, and on July 3, 1948 they were united in marriage. She survives, as do his three children: James Jane Nyce of Wilton, CT; Rick Sue Nyce of Kalamazoo; and Amy Nyce of Delafield, WI; along with grandchildren Emma, Andrew, Katherine, Jonathan, Lindsay, and Christine Nyce; a brother, Ray Christine Nyce of Telford, PA; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother. Private graveside services will be held in Mt. Ever-Rest Cemetery. There will be no visitation. A public memorial service will be announced at a later date to celebrate his life. Memorials may be directed to the Kalamazoo Loaves and Fishes, Salvation Army, or the Trinity Lutheran Church.
