SCHUPAN, Charlette
Of Portage, Michigan Charlette passed away peacefully on January 12, 2009. She was born in Newark, NJ on January 5, 1927 to Fae and Shay Okun. She graduated from University High School. In 1946 she married Nelson Schupan. They had four children, Marc, Anelyse, Dan, and Dana. Charlette pursued her interest in creative writing at Western Michigan University. Her writing passion led to being published in several national magazines and a recognized short story. Charlette was active in the Congregation of Moses, serving as president of the sisterhood, youth group advisor, and board member. Charlette spent many years promoting the ideals of justice, equality and tolerance by presenting the "Dolls of Democracy" in the Kalamazoo Public Schools. She was also very active in the Democratic Party. Charlette enjoyed traveling around the world exploring new cultures and ideas. Ultimately, her highest priority was her family. She will be remembered for her warmth, generosity and humor. Preceding her in death were her beloved husband, Nelson, in 1974; her brother, Dr. Lawrence Okun; and grandson, Seth N. Schupan, in 2002. Surviving are her children, Marc Jeanne Schupan, Anelyse Peter Cotter, Daniel Sherry Schupan and Dana Jay Wardlaw; 10 grandchildren, Shayna John Barry, Jacob and Jordan Schupan, Victoria and Abigail Cotter, Shay Julie, Justin and Micah Schupan, Maxwell and Alexandra Wardlaw; and 2 great-grandchildren, Rachel and Ben Barry. Funeral services for Charlette will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, January 15th, at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 S. 9th Street, with Rabbi Harvey Spivak officiating.
