Charles De Young

June 19, 1915 — June 22, 2010

DE YOUNG, Charles "Chuck"
Kalamazoo Passed away on Tuesday, June 22, 2010, three days after his 95th birthday.
Chuck was born June 19, 1915, to Sadie and Samuel De Young in Zeeland, Michigan. His childhood was spent in a variety of places; the wilderness of Wisconsin, where he claims to have built his own road in order to attend school; Chicago, as a young teen-ager, the stories of which his children were only allowed to hear edited versions of and, finally, Decatur, as a young man.
Chuck met his future wife, Helen Danhof, at a skating rink in the early 40's. It was love at first sight but World War II intervened and they were finally married four and a half years later on August 25, 1945, two weeks after Chuck's discharge from the US Army. They had three children; Donald, Robert and Janice. The marriage flourished for 64 years until last year when Helen passed away.
Chuck worked at the Upjohn Company for 32 years. He was a wonderful father and a caring devoted grandparent. He was the guy you called when you wanted a refrigerator or a hide-a-bed moved. He was a strong man both physically and spiritually and had a deep belief in the grace of God. He is sorely missed. He was preceded in death by his wife Helen; son, Donald; daughter-in-law, Kathy; grandson, Chance and brother, Martin. Surviving are: a son, Robert De Young of Martin; a daughter, Janice Ul Claassen of Lawton; five grandchildren, Ian Claasen, Vanessa Tim Strausberg, Ryan, Emily and Kathy De Young; four great-grandchildren Ivy and Nola Strausberg, Makayla De Young and Jace Claassen; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held 1:00 Saturday afternoon at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick St., with his pastor, Rev. Philip Kok of Prairie Edge Christian Reformed Church, officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Private interment in Riverside Cemetery.
Memorials should be directed to Prairie Edge Christian Reformed Church. Please visit www.langelands.com to sign Chuck's online guest book or leave a condolence to his family. 269-343-1508
