PAYTON, Mr. Charles J. ?Chuck? Portage Chuck Payton passed away early Saturday morning, September 22, 2007, in Kalamazoo, MI. He was born September 19, 1946 in Grand Rapids, MI a son of Cyril and Phyllis Payton. Chuck graduated from Grand Valley State College and served in the US Army during the Vietnam War. His family was deeply involved with the Salvation Army, serving as officers for many years. Chuck worked as an appraiser for Meijer for many years and retired from the City of Grand Rapids in 1998. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Bob Payton. On May 20, 1996, Chuck was united in marriage with Bonnie, who survives. Also surviving are: his step-children, Christine Todd Brower, Ray Kajkowski, Jr., and Garrett Kajkowski all of Gobles; four grandchildren; sister, Marjorie Cheyne; brother, Bill Sally Payton; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service to celebrate Chuck?s life will be held 11:00 Thursday morning at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 S. 9th Street, with Captain Tom McComb of The Salvation Army, officiating. Friends and family will gather one hour prior to the service for visitation. Private inurnment will be held later in Fort Custer National Cemetery. Memorial contributions should be directed to The Salvation Army, 1700 S. Burdick Street, Kalamazoo, MI 49007.
