Carter D. Brooks of Kalamazoo, Michigan, passed away peacefully on November 17, 2023, at the age of 89. Carter was born in Greenville, Pennsylvania on April 20, 1934 to Norman and Elsie Brooks. After graduating from Penn High in Greenville, he moved to State College to attend Penn State University. At Penn State, he met Toni Vido, whom he married shortly after graduation in 1956. Carter and Toni moved to Philadelphia where Carter attended medical school at the University of Pennsylvania.  Carter graduated from Penn in 1959 and pursued his residency in pediatrics at the Philadelphia Children’s Hospital. After completing military service in the Navy in Corpus Christi, TX, Carter and Toni moved to Kalamazoo in 1964 where he has lived ever since. Carter moved to Kalamazoo to take a job with the Upjohn Company. At Upjohn, he worked registering and developing new drugs and ultimately working in a hospital-based clinical research unit, a position that allowed him to practice medicine, teach and do research. Throughout, Carter practiced pediatrics “after hours” across town to satisfy his clinical needs and describes interactions with young patients in his medical memoir as the most gratifying part of his very successful professional career.
In his personal life, Carter enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who took care of those he cared about and was at the same time an engaging and calming presence.  He always had interesting stories to tell and was anxious to hear the stories of others. He loved sailing, reading on his porch overlooking Lake Michigan, watching sunsets, writing about his life and memories, and playing cribbage with his children and grandchildren. We are all grateful to have had him in our lives for as long as we did, and we will miss him more than we can possibly say.
Carter is survived by three children, Paul (Rebecca) Brooks, Susan (John) Herzog, and Andrew (Diana) Brooks and six grandchildren, Quinn, Bennet, Jack, Elise, Antonia, and Lawrence. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Grant.  Visitation will take place on Sunday November 26, 2023 from 1:00pm to 3:00pm, with a funeral service to follow at St. Martin of Tours Episcopal Church, 2010 Nichols Rd. Arrangements entrusted to Langeland Family Funeral Homes Burial & Cremation Services 3926 S 9th Street Kalamazoo, MI 49009.
