PHILLIPS, Mr. Carl Alba "Stub" "Fuzzy"
Kalamazoo, MI Age 70, Won his valiant battle with cancer upon entering heaven's gates Friday afternoon September 21, 2012. He was born August 16, 1942 in Kalamazoo, Michigan a son of Carl M. and Donavieve Sweetland Phillips. Carl was a Staff Sergeant in the US Army, serving his Country with great pride as an Army Aviation Instructor at Ft. Rucker, AL in the area of helicopter maintenance. He served at several duty stations including Korea, Vietnam, Germany and in the US. After returning to the States he settled down in the Kalamazoo area where he began a career as an inventory specialist in the semi-truck and heavy equipment maintenance industry working for Daleidens, Waterland White, Freightliner, Michigan Kenworth, Mack of Michigan and finally retiring from Wise International. Carl was a die-hard Tiger fan, enjoyed trips to Florida to watch spring training and the "D" for games. History was his passion with extensive focus in the area of the civil war. He enjoyed traveling to battle sites of the north. A meticulous gardener and lawn maintainer, he kept it all spot on. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, William Benton Phillips. On May 5, 1996, he was united in marriage to Katherine E. Clawson Phillips who survives. Also surviving, 4 children, Todd DeAnna Phillips of Kalamazoo, Lisa Mark Frasier of Otsego, Heidi West of Indianapolis, IN, and Michael Sharon Stratton of Castel Rock, CO; 11 grandchildren to whom he was known as "Grampa Stubby", Kelly, Holly & Sara Phillips, Ryan & Andrew Steffler, Sierra & Sophia Frasier, Dakota & Jamie Rogan & Alexus West, and Miranda Stratton; and a brother, Robert Barbara Phillips of Kalamazoo. Private graveside services will be held in Fort Custer National Cemetery with full military honors. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be directed to the Disabled American Veterans.
