Portage Billy L. Channells died Friday, January 11, 2008 at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo. He was born July 27, 1931, in Kalamazoo, MI, a son of William Harley and Nellie Minerva Worst Channells.
Bill grew up at Deep Point, Long Lake and attended Smith School in Pavilion Township. He served in the US Army for over nine years and then entered the US Marine Corps Reserves. Bill attended KVCC studying Fire Science, and was one of the first classes to graduate from Grand Valley's EMT/Paramedic course. In August of 1965, Bill joined the Portage Fire Department and retired in December of 1993 as a Captain. As a Certified Master Mechanic, Bill was able to fix anything. His abilities earned him the title "Give it to Billy, he can fix anything" from his buddies at the fire department. Bill ran his own business, Emergency Equipment Specialties, where he repaired fire trucks and conducted fire pump testing throughout the region. He was a member of Centre Avenue Community Church of God and a member of the Long Lake Association, where he was in charge of maintaining the Long Lake water level pump. Bill was preceded in death by his parents. On February 28, 1959, Bill was united in marriage with the former Nancy DeHaan, who survives. Also surviving are: two children and their spouses, Mark Janet Channells of Richland and Sue Don Lumbard of Kalamazoo; three grandchildren, Jason, Christopher and Holly Channells; two step-grandchildren, Suzie Jr. Dean and Dan Lumbard; four step-great-grandchildren, Cole and Cruz Dean and Braeden and Camden Lumbard; a sister, Maree Fuller; a brother, D. Jim Daskal; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held 3:00 Tuesday afternoon at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre Ave., with Pastor Richard Hertsel of Center Avenue Community Church of God, officiating. Interment in Central Portage Cemetery will follow services. Visitation will be held Sunday from 1 to 3pm and Monday from 6 to 8pm at the funeral home.
