Long-time Kalamazoo resident Beth Shirley, age 98, died peacefully in her sleep on February 13, 2025, with family by her side.
Beth left her birthplace, a farm north of Grand Rapids, MI, after graduating from Sand Lake High School. She attended Western Michigan College (now University), and in her senior year, she met John Shirley, with whom she happily shared married life for fifty years. He preceded her in death, as did her parents, Frances and William Boezwinkle, and her three older brothers.
Beth was an elementary teacher, then a stay-at-home mom. Later, she worked alongside John when he began his real estate and appraisal business. Beth was active at Westwood United Methodist Church, in Grow & Show Garden Club, and several bridge clubs. Gardening and golf were her favorite outdoor activities. Her family meant the world to her. Beth loved spending time with her four grandchildren and was always happy to hear their stories. In recent years, she enjoyed keeping in touch with them and her six great-grandchildren, via modern technology.
Beth is survived by her two children, Linda (Dan) Derfiny, Kalamazoo, and Steve (Bridget) Shirley, Racine, WI, and four grandchildren: Matt Derfiny, Michelle (Andres) Wells, Devin (Joe) Hanson, and Eric (Ashley) Shirley. Much-loved great-grandchildren include Dominic Wells, Alma, Moriah, and Adrienne Hanson, and Cedric & Eamon Shirley.
Beth wanted to be sure that her obituary expressed sincere thanks for the very good care and friendship of the staff at Meilland Square at the Heritage Community, and to the great visiting personnel from Centrica Care Hospice.
A memorial service to celebrate Beth’s life will be held at Westwood United Methodist Church at a later date. Beth’s cremated remains will be interred with her husband John at Ft. Custer National Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Centrica Care Navigators Hospice, the Foundation at Westwood United Methodist Church, or Kalamazoo in Bloom.
