Bertha “Bert” Fenwick, age 94, of Kalamazoo, Michigan, finally got her wish on September 2 to die peacefully. Bert was born in Perry, Michigan, on December 30, 1929, to Hedley and Mary Grace (Bunt) Bennett and spent many of her growing-up years as a Methodist minister’s daughter in the Upper Peninsula. She graduated from Swartz Creek (Michigan) High School before coming to Kalamazoo to attend Bronson Methodist Hospital School of Nursing. Shortly after graduating, she met and married Kalamazoo native Charles (Chuck) Fenwick in 1952. They were married nearly 67 years before Chuck’s death in 2019.
Other than retirement winters in Gulf Shores, Alabama, Bert and Chuck always lived in Kalamazoo where Bert worked as an RN in various medical settings. Bert enjoyed many things, but especially singing and playing the piano. She had an artistic flair and was active in many church and community activities throughout her life.
Bert was preceded in death by her husband, Chuck, her parents, and all her siblings – Marguerite, Maurice, Sam, and Mary Lou. She is survived by and will be greatly missed by her children, Marc (Charlotte) Fenwick, Beth (Jeff) Freeman, Dave Fenwick, and Mary Waters; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and other extended family and friends.
Cremation has taken place according to Bert’s wishes. A celebration of her long and full life will take place on Friday, October 11, from 12 pm to 2 pm at Langeland Family Funeral Homes Burial & Cremation Services, 622 S Burdick St, Kalamazoo, MI 49007, followed by interment at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, MI.
