SMITH, Bernard E.
Portage, Michigan Passed away Monday, September 1, 2008. He was born May 11, 1918 in Wayland, the son of Clayton Bart and Ruby Vera Carpenter Smith and had lived in the Kalamazoo area for most of his life. Bernie had worked for the Upjohn Company for 35 years and was a WW II veteran of the United States Navy. He graduated from Wayland High School and Parson's Business College. He was attending St. Andrew's Church in Kalamazoo. He was as Life Member in the Masonic Lodge, where he served as a Past Master of Lodge #87, and also served as the secretary for over 35 years. Bernie also served on the Demolay Board and was member of the Chapter Council Community. On May 18, 1940, he married Naomi Van Deusen and they celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary this year. They were both teachers in round dancing, and were members of the Michigan Round Dance Association for over 40 years. Bernie also cued for round dances. Bernie is survived by his wife, Naomi; their children, Portia Lynn Blett of Portage and Jeffrey Rose Smith of Bloomingdale; 8 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; two brothers, Raymond Smith and Clancey Smith; a sister, Ellen Rose Parlmer; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Sidnee Renie; a granddaughter, Shawn Renie Hageman; and 3 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday at 1:00 PM in the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 S. 9th St. with Rev. James Dyke officiating. Masonic Services provided by Lodge #2287The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 4-7 PM.
