Formerly of Kalamazoo Bernie passed away peacefully Sunday, October 17, 2010 at Diana's Care of Otsego where he had been a resident for three years. He was born August 7, 1913 in Kalamazoo, the son of Walenty and Sophia Kovalczyk. He married Dorothy Campbell on April 20, 1937 and she preceded him in death in 1984. Bernie and Dot raised three children; Kay Jones of Gobles, MI, Bud and Janet Kovalchik of Colville, WA, and Kelly and Larry Perkins of Phoenix, AZ. They have five grandchildren; Rick and Kerri Jones of Kentwood, MI, Rob and Stacy Jones of Edmond, OK, Becky and Sean Murphy of Moore, OK, Darren Kovalchik and friend Kelli Riddle of Seattle, WA, and Kevin Kovalchik and fiancée Hilary of Corvallis, OR. They also have six great-grandchildren; Erin, Trey, Ro, Kaylee, Kadi and Hannah. Bernie is survived by his sister Alice Jakanski and special friend Gert Pritchard. He was preceded in death by his sister Helen Maher and son-in-law Dick Jones. Bernie owned and operated the Sportsman Center Bar, Restaurant and Bowling Alley for 40 years. He was inducted into the Kalamazoo Bowling Hall of Fame in 1992. A graveside service will be held in the Cremation Section of Riverside Cemetery on Friday, October 29th at 2 pm, followed by friendship, stories, and CHEERS at the Sports Forum, 803 W.
