Portage Passed away February 2, 2010. Bernadine was born July 29, 1922 in Mecosta Co., MI, one of four daughters born to Henry John and Emma Bauman Abel. She had lived in the Kalamazoo for many years and was a charter member of St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Portage. On September 2, 1942, she married Byron S. Flickinger, who preceded her in death on December 15, 1999. She was also preceded by her parents; a son, David Flickinger in December, 2006; and 2 sisters, Mildred Weiss and Evelyn Bonnell. Bernadine is survived by her children, Thomas Sharon Flickinger of Schoolcraft, Robert Joan Flickinger of Lansing and Katherine Flickinger of Saginaw; 4 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; one sister, Erma Dobbertien of Marshall, MI; nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 10:00 AM in St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, 1150 W. Centre Ave., with Rev. Fr. John Fleckenstein, celebrant. Interment will take place in Mt. Ever-Rest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre Ave. on Sunday from 3-6 PM, with a Scripture Service at 5:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association.
