KUCHMUK, Captain Benjamin D.
1982-2021
of Portage
Benjamin D. Kuchmuk, 38, of Portage, Michigan, passed Saturday morning with his loving wife, Emily, by his side.
Ben, son of David and Mary, was born October 19, 1982 in Traverse City; a 2001 graduate of TC West Sr. High. He attended Baker College, graduating Magna Cum Laude earning a Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology and Security. In 2007, Ben enlisted in the Michigan Air National Guard and worked as a Federal Employee in Cyber Operations based in Battle Creek. He was awarded 110th Airlift Wing Outstanding NCO of the Year 2014 and NCO of the Year for the State of Michigan 2015. Ben earned his commission in 2017 and became Captain Kuchmuk in March 2021.
On June 4, 2011 in Traverse City, Ben wed Emily (Raffaelle) who survives, as do their two courageous sons, Augustus (6) and Maximus (8). Ben was known to his family, friends, and coworkers as being fun, loving, friendly, family-oriented, as well as adventurous. Although, some of his colleagues may also fondly remember him as being snarky and stubborn on occasion. As an avid runner, he participated in many 5k and family fun runs with his family. Ben enjoyed camping, traveling, taking the boys for Jet Ski rides, and teaching Maximus and Augustus about the history of the places that he and his family visited. To honor his time in the military, Ben dedicated time to teaching his boys about respecting our flag, country, and its traditions. A highlight of each Memorial Day was taking his family to the Memorial Day Ceremony held in Portage. Ben truly was a proud and loyal patriot to his country.
Also surviving are Ben's parents, David (Susan Monty) Kuchmuk, Mary (Dean) Reid; brothers, Joshua Kuchmuk, Corey Kuchmuk, sister, Tricia (Mike Bopry) Fraser; and several nieces and nephews.
He will be dearly missed by his family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues; may he rest in peace.
A private service will be held at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Monday April 12, 2021, followed by a Celebration of Ben's Life at Calvary Reformed Church, 7829 5th Street, Mattawan at 2:00 PM, luncheon starting at 1:00PM.
