Barbara Jean (Sellers) Bennett of Portage, Michigan, passed away peacefully on August 3, 2024, at the age of 93. Barbara was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, on April 29, 1931, to the late Cecil Sellers and Fern (Ellard) Dell.
In 1949, Barbara married Henry Amey, and together they had four children. Then, in 1981, Barbara married Richard Bennett. The two were married for 43 years.
Upon graduation, she became a homemaker and raised a family. In the mid 60’s, she worked as a server in two different establishments before she took a job at the Upjohn Pharmaceutical Company as a manager in the food service department.
She was a member of the Portage United Methodist Church where she loved to sing in the choir. In her spare time, she enjoyed cooking and knitting. Then, as everyone in the family will tell you, she loved to shop. Her favorite stores were Gilmore’s and Jacobson’s.
Barbara had an appealing personality – she made friends easily and was admired by all. She will be remembered for her good sense of humor and her love of the 1960’s variety shows where she could be heard laughing out loud at all their hilarious antics.
Barbara is survived by her husband, Richard Bennett; a half-brother and sister; daughter, Sharon (Bruce) Rosema; sons, Jesse (Nancy) Amey and Robert Amey; granddaughters, Jessica (Jeremy) Hembree and Jenny Ouding; great grandsons, Jameson and Braden Hembree; stepson, Rick Bennett; stepdaughter, Pam Moberley, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; two half-sisters; her son, Henry Amey Jr.; her daughter-in-law, Mary Amey; granddaughter, Aimee Ouding; and her great-granddaughter, Alaina Grace Hembree.
