of Portage, MI Passed away October 8, 2009 at Tendercare of Portage. She was born September 14, 1919 in Kalamazoo, to the late William and Edith Nyberg Ayers. Athene was united in marriage on July 19, 1942 to Walter Tucker, for 49 wonderful years together. He preceded her in death in 1991. Athene had been an office manager for the majority of her working years. She was employed with the federal government during WWII, Fairmont Hospital and the Kalamazoo County Road Commission, from which she retired. She was a member of the Daughters of the Nile, First United Methodist Church and Ladies Library Association. Surviving Athene are, her daughter, Mary Kenneth VanHook of Portage; grandchildren, Mark Deb VanHook and David VanHook; nieces and nephews, Sharon Ronald Butler, Jean Peter Karsten, Thomas Ayres, Steven Patty Ayres, Joel Karen Ayres, Randy Colleen Ayres, James "Jimmy" Nancy Ayres and Jackie Paul Collignon. Also preceding her in death were brothers, Denman Ayres, Walter "Jim" Ayres and Robert Ayres. Services will take place Monday, 11:00, at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick St., where family will greet friends from 10 - 11:00, just prior to services. Interment will follow at Mt. Ever-Rest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Kalamazoo Humane Society or a charity of one's choice.
