CALLOWAY, Mrs. Anne M. Whitney
Kalamazoo, MI Died Saturday morning December 27, 2008. Anne Marie Whitney was born in Brooklyn, New York on October 2, 1921, the only daughter of William E. Whitney and Anna Chance Whitney. She received a B. A. from Swarthmore College, an M.A. from Columbia University, a Ph. D. from the University of Pennsylvania and an Associate Degree in Computer Science from KVCC. Anne taught mathematics at Goucher College, Carleton College, and Kalamazoo College. She joined the WAVES and worked on sound vibrations in submarines during World War II. Later she worked for the State of Michigan in the Department of Transportation. She was the co-author of several mathematical papers on mathematical analysis and maintained a lively interest in artificial intelligence and "fuzzy" logic. As a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church she was an active knitter of scarves for seamen and worked faithfully on the Church Library. Anne was a very generous person who had a knack for giving gifts that were just right. She loved to learn and was an avid reader for all of her 87 years. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Jean M. Calloway whom she married June 21, 1952. Also surviving, two daughters Nancy Calloway of Kalamazoo and Catherine Anne Calloway of Kalispell, MT. A memorial service will be held at 10 o'clock Friday at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 247 E. Lovell St. Interment will take place at the St. Luke's Columbarium. Friends may meet the family at a reception in the Guild Room of the church after the service. Memorials may be made to Partners in Transition, Swarthmore College, St. Luke's, or the charity of your choice. Arrangements were made by the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S.
