POEL, Andrew J. "Andy"
Kalamazoo, Michigan Went home to his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, September 16, 2008. Andy was born September 22, 1914 in Kalamazoo, a son of Herman and Reka Weyland Poel and was a lifelong resident of Kalamazoo. He was a lifelong member of Grace Christian Reformed Church and had worked for Clarage Fan Company, later Zurn Industries, for over 40 years. Andy was respected by his children, grandchildren and friends for his generous spirit, his servant heart and his gracious disposition. He loved to sing and his children's fondest memories were of singing together in the car on the way for Saturday night ice cream. After his retirement, Andy continued to serve by mowing lawns at Grace Church and South Christian School. He also helped his nephews in the Dave Smit Greenhouse and Steve Zylstra Greenhouse until he was 87 years old. On September 28, 1939 Andy was married to Gertrude Poortenga and she preceded him in death on April 30, 1996. He was also preceded in death by his parents; two sisters and their husbands, Donna Menno VanDyke and Muriel Tom Kramer; and a sister-in-law, Emma Poel. His survivors include his children, Robert Mary Jo Poel of Portage, James G. Lois Poel of Kalamazoo, Joyce Glen Walstra of Grand Rapids and Marilyn Paul Braman of Grand Rapids; grandchildren, Amy & Peter Poel, Joel, Kara and Marc Jamie Poel, Eric Karen Walstra, Kent Vanessa Walstra, Ryan Kristen Braman, Jill Ben Pitsch and Sara James Wever; 10 great grandchildren; a brother, Clarence Poel of Kalamazoo; two sisters-in-law, Johanna Triemstra and Tressa Smit; many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday at 3:00 PM in the Grace Christian Reformed Church, 1724 Whites Rd. with Rev. Dr. Harry Arnold officiating. A private family interment will take place in the Comstock Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 S. 9th St. on Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM and at the church on Friday prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Grace Christian Reformed Church Memorial Fund, the Kalamazoo Christian School Association or Park Village Pines.
