CARLSON, Andrew R.
of Kalamazoo Andrew R. Carlson passed away March 31, 2010. Andrew was born in Ludington, Michigan on August 19, 1934, the son of the late Mable Genter and Louis Carlson. Andrew served his country during the Korean War. Following his military service, he earned Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Western Michigan University and a Ph.D. in history from Michigan State. The study of history and books were a lifelong passion. He taught German history and military history classes at Michigan State University, Eastern Kentucky University, Ferris State University, and Western Michigan University. Andrew also worked at the Kalamazoo County Probate Court from 1976 to 2003 where he microfilmed case files and worked with all aspects of the court records. Following his retirement from the Probate Court, Andrew focused on teaching and writing, completing numerous book reviews and many conference presentations. Andrew is survived by his wife of 50 years, Linda Volfarts Carlson and his children Sharon Carlson, Andrew Carlson, and a son-in-law Thomas Dietz, all of Kalamazoo. He is also survived by his brothers and a sister, Louis Rosamund Carlson, Donald Shirley Carlson, and Margaret Richard Dodson, all of Ludington, and many nieces and nephews. A private burial service with military honors occurred on April 8 at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Battle Creek.
