SMITH, Alyce Lorraine
of Galesburg Passed away November 8, 2007 at her home in Galesburg. Alyce was born on September 1, 1930 in Chicago, IL to Wm. LeRoy and Alyce Scoville Hunt. She was united in marriage to Sydney Smith on December 23, 1950, in Detroit. Sydney survives her. Although Alyce had many interests, her family always came first and foremost as she took a great interest in her children?s activities and education. She was a secretary in the Women?s Physical Education Department at Western Michigan University for 22 years, where she established many lifetime friends. She took a keen interest in the students? needs, serving informally as a mentor to some, a shoulder to cry on for others and a problem solver for many. The warm smile and kind heart that drew students to her was extended to everyone she met. She devoted countless hours after her retirement to the research of her family genealogy. She served on the Galesburg Planning Commission and was involved with her children in 4-H. She was known to always have a smile on her face and was well-liked by everyone. Surviving are her children, Christopher Cathy Smith of Battle Creek, Allan LeRoy Smith of Cherry Hill, NJ, Perry Debra Smith of Newberry, MI and Susan Alyce Smith of Kalamazoo; sister, Joann Jack Ramm; sister-in-law, Doris Ann Charlie Miller; 8 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; many nieces, a nephew and cousins. A visitation will be held Monday, November 12th, from 3 - 7:00pm. at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Galesburg Chapel, 145 W. Battle Creek St., Galesburg. Funeral services will take place at the chapel on Tuesday, the 13th, at 10:00AM, Rev. Whitney Brown, officiating. A private committal service will follow at Ft. Custer National Cemetery in Augusta. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Starr Commonwealth, 13725 Starr Commonwealth Rd., Albion, MI 49224 or to a charity of one?s choice.
