HUNTER, Alice Elizabeth Westerman
Kalamazoo, Michigan Alice Elizabeth Westerman Hunter died on April 5, 2008 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where she and her husband, Robert Kilbourn Hunter, former Norton Township Supervisor and Norton Shores City Administrator, had moved in 2006 from Muskegon, Michigan. She was born on August 14, 1917 in Chicago, Illinois of Leland Stewart Westerman of Adrian, Michigan and Lelah Arndt Westerman of Evart, Michigan. Her father was a YMCA executive, and her family moved from Chicago to Muskegon when she was young, then to Grand Rapids, and returned to Chicago, where she graduated from high school. She spent summers growing up with her two younger sisters, Eleanor and Ruth, at their maternal grandparents' farm in Avondale, Michigan. She attended Albion College, at which time she met her husband. They were married in 1940 and built a house on Forest Park Road in Muskegon, where they lived until 2006. She also graduated from the Lucid Secretarial School in Grand Rapids. During World War II, when her husband went overseas, she stayed in Grand Rapids and served as a field worker for the Camp Fire Girls. After the war, they returned to Muskegon. From 1962 to 1982, she was Secretary to the Principal of Churchill Henry Elementary School in Norton Shores. She was an active member of PEO Chapter Y in Muskegon, serving as President, and Chapter Q in Kalamazoo; Central United Methodist Church in Muskegon; the PTA of Maple Grove School, where she served as President, and Mona Shores High School; and was active in local Republican politics, serving as President of the Muskegon County Republican Women's Club. Her interests included traveling with her husband throughout the United States and Europe, music, and she was an accomplished knitter. She is survived by her husband, Robert Kilbourn Hunter of Muskegon; her two children, John Westerman Hunter of Reston, Virginia, and Mary Alice Meme Hunter Bennett of Kalamazoo, and a son-in-law, Charles Garrett Bennett of Kalamazoo; five grandchildren, Andrew Kilbourn Hunter of Reston, Virginia, Breean Elizabeth Bennett of Kalamazoo, Christian Thomas Hunter Colleen of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, Adam Hunter Bennett Amy of Kalamazoo, and Meredith Hunter Foster Geoff of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; and two great grandchildren, Ashlyn Aileen Hunter of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, and Hunter Thompson Bennett of Kalamazoo. The family asks that contributions be made to Central United Methodist Church, 1011 Second Street, Muskegon, Michigan 49440. Memorial services will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, April 11 at Friendship Village in the Kiva, 1400 North Drake Road, Kalamazoo, and at 10:00 AM on Saturday, April 12 at Central United Methodist Church, 1011 Second Street, Muskegon.
