of Portage, MI
Formerly of Kingsford, MI Alene passed away Friday morning, March 30, 2012, in Kalamazoo, MI. She was born March 6, 1920, in Bedford, IA, a daughter of Glade and Rose Cannon Shearer. Alene was a very active member of her home church, Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Kingsford and after moving to Portage, she was a member of St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church. She was an avid bird watcher and a member of the Audubon Society. Alene was a gifted seamstress, enjoyed gardening and crafts and baked cakes for special occasions. On June 8, 1940, Alene was united in marriage with Frank N. Kangas who preceded her in death on February 26, 1993. Alene was also preceded in death by her parents and a son, Richard Kangas. Surviving are: a son, Eugene Donna Kangas of Portage; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Don Adams of Portage, Matthew Angela Kangas of Mattawan and Eric Shannon Kangas of South Lyon; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Don Cleora Shearer of Pulaski, WI, Paul Roberta Shearer of Spencer, IA; a sister, Pauline John Livingston of St. Charles, MO; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held Monday from 6 to 8PM at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre Ave. Services will be held 11:00 Tuesday morning at St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church 2381 Romence Rd, with Rev. Mark Gieschen, officiating. Alene will be buried next to her husband in Quinnesec Cemetery. Memorials should be directed to St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church or to Southern Care Hospice.
