VETS, Albert
of Portage Passed away July 23, 2010 at Wynwood of Portage. Born in Sioux City, IA on December 4, 1913 moved to Kalamazoo, MI in 1967. He wintered in Sebring, FL for 20 years, was active in shuffleboard, bowling and his love for golf, which he played until he was 89 years old. Albert moved to Sunrise Retirement home in March of 2003 and had lots of friends there, loved to play bridge, sometimes 3 days a week. In June of 2010 he moved to Wynwood of Portage. He belonged to the Sebring tourist club and was a member of the Elks for 35 years. He held the course record at Grand Prairie golf course in 1972 until the clubhouse burned down in the late 1980's. He was married on November 25, 1967 to Eleanor Maul who died on February 14, 2003. He worked for Hammond Machinery. He had a baseball signed by Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig which he donated to the Sioux City, IA museum and is currently on display. Surviving Albert are his children, Carolyn Loren Purk of Paw Paw, Marian Rodney Munro of Paw Paw, Peggy Jim Larson of Parchment; daughter-in-law, Cindy Maul; grandchildren, Ron Julie Caswell, Chad Caswell, Chris Alex Moldovan, John Munro, Theresa Matt Martin, Carla Tom Gabala, Miki Purk, James Larson and Joey Larson; many great grandchildren; niece, Sandra Jay Hesse; nephew, John Vets. He never forgot to give his grandchildren and great grandchildren a little money on their birthdays; he always said kids need a little spending money. He attended St. Augustine Catholic Church and he continued to attend mass every Sunday at Sunrise Community. Also preceding him in death were; son, Eugene Maul; his parents; step-father, George Dapkevich; brothers, Eugene and Veto Vets. A Memorial Service will take place Monday, July 26, 2010 at 2:00 o'clock, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, 1628 East G Ave., Parchment, Fr. James O'Leary, officiating.
