William VanDenBerg

Kalamazoo, Michigan Passed away Thursday, December 10, 2009. Bill was born June 3, 1925, in Kalamazoo, the son of Leonard and Leona Lemmer VanDenBerg and has been a lifelong area resident. He served as a Navy F.M.F. corpsman in the field with the 2nd Marine Division. During WWII he fought in the battles of Okinawa and Saipan and participated in the invasion of Normandy. He was a land surveyor at Wilkins and Wheaton Engineering Corp. for more than 50 years. He was also a member of the Faith Reformed Church for over 50 years. On November 10, 1943, he was joined in marriage to Lorraine Otis VanDenBerg who preceded him in death on February 24, 2003. He was preceded in death by his parents and nine siblings. Surviving are four children, Jerry Anita VanDenBerg of Kalamazoo, Steve Susan VanDenBerg of Plainwell, Barb Myers of Coldwater, Susan Kevin Keasey of Grand Rapids; ten grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Don VanDenBerg and many nieces and nephews. Bill was known for his generosity and sense of humor. He will be sincerely missed by his family and friends. In Bill's words he went to "join the Lord and his wife Lorraine". Graveside services with military honors will be held at Ft. Custer National Cemetery, Friday December 18, 2009 with Pastor David Bruininks officiating. Following the service please join Bill's family at his home for food and fellowship. Graveside services will take place at Ft. Custer National Cemetery, Friday December 18th at 10:00. Those wishing to attend should be in the cortege area no earlier than 9:45 and no later than 10:00. Memorials in Bill's memory may be directed to the Kairos Dwelling.
