Kalamazoo, MI Ruth Jane Overbeek was born September 23, 1918, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the daughter of Reine and Martha DeMink Smith and went home to be with her Lord on March 27, 2011 in Centreville, Michigan. She was a lifelong Kalamazoo area resident and was employed for 12 years as an administrative assistant at Western Michigan University. Family was a very important part of Ruth's life. She was a member of Paw Paw United Methodist Church; and she enjoyed camping and fishing with her husband. On June 1, 1940, she was united in marriage to Peter Overbeek who preceded her in death on January 15, 2003. She was also preceded in death by her parents and by all of her siblings, Garrett Smith, H.E. Smith and Eileen Longanecker. Surviving are her children, Howard Karyn Overbeek of Sturgis, MI, Ryan Judie Overbeek of Kalispell, MT and Karen Hastings of Buchanan, MI; grandchildren, Tamera Overbeek of Durham, NC, Tiffany Overbeek of Kalamazoo, Martha Overbeek of Kalispell, MT, Serah Breakstone of Portland, OR, Chris Hastings of Battle Creek, Kelley Hastings of Kalamazoo and Kimberly Hastings of Buchanan. The family will receive friends from 10-11 AM on Friday, April 15 at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre Ave. where a service to celebrate her life will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, April 15 with Pastor Mark Vanderson officiating. A private interment will be held in Riverside Cemetery.
