Went to be with his Lord Tuesday evening, February 13, 2018. Richard was born December 4, 1933 in Kalamazoo the son of the late Jerry and Evelyn (Lyke) Smith and had been a lifelong resident in the Kalamazoo area. Prior to his retirement he was employed for 40 years with the Upjohn Company. Richard was a member of the New Apostolic Church where he was an Evangelist for 40 years and very involved keeping the building in top notch condition. He enjoyed fishing, horseshoes, softball, mini golf, and just plain joking around with family and friends. On November 20, 1953 he was united in marriage to his loving wife of nearly 65 years, Helen (Klaassen) who survives. Also surviving are his children, Gary (Nancy) Smith, Terry (Linda) Smith, Dennis (Carol) Smith, Debi (Darwin) Ruimveld, Jeff (Shannon) Smith, Dawn Smith (Sean Johnson), Renae (Don) DeKam; 16 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Jackie Raab, Janet (Ken) Cook, Jean (Jim) Singleton, Robert (Louise) Smith, Tim Smith, Joan (David) Temple; and many nieces and nephews. Richard was preceded in death by an infant brother, Jerry "Buddy"; 2 sons, Randy and Rick; and sisters, Geri Gerhard and Laura Weber. Friends may meet the family Friday evening, February 16 from 5-8pm at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 South 9th Street. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am Saturday February 17, at the New Apostolic Church of Portage, 3600 W. Milham with Rev. Peter Cook officiating. Private interment will be in Mt. Ever-Rest Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the New Apostolic Church of Portage.
