Richard Allen Gates, age 73, passed away at Bronson Hospital on May 6, 2020 following complications from heart surgery. He is survived by his wife MaryJean Oberdoerster of Portage, brother Robert (Vicki) of Portage, niece Kelly Rendell (Jason), and great nephew Keaton of Scotts. His parents Merrill and Ruth Gates and sister Pam Verbanac preceded him in death.

Richard was employed by The Upjohn Company for many years prior to his retirement. He was an avid golfer, a car aficionado (Corvettes in particular), and friend to many. Richard had a sensitive nature, a friendly disposition, and a compassionate heart - always ready with a kind word and a hug. He especially enjoyed greeting people as a ticket taker at Miller Auditorium for many years and volunteering at the local food pantry. Richard proudly served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. He will be remembered for his optimistic outlook despite the many adversities he faced. Although we are diminished by his passing, the love he leaves will grow and flourish as long as memory lasts.

A service for family will be held at Fort Custer National Cemetery. A life celebration will be held when it's safe to gather. An announcement will appear in the Kalamazoo Gazette. Memorial donations may be made to Loaves and Fishes, Southridge Reformed Church, or First Tee of West Michigan.
