ELLINGER, Richard R. "Sarge"
Kalamazoo, MI Richard Ralph "Sarge" Ellinger, age 97, passed away on Sunday, July 19, 2015 in Kalamazoo, MI. He was born in Kalamazoo on May 21, 1918 a son of Ralph and Doris Palmer Ellinger and had been a lifelong area resident. Richard served in the US Army during WWII in Africa. He worked for General Electric for over 30 years before retiring. Richard enjoyed traveling, playing golf, gardening and watching the Detroit Tigers. His unassuming wit was unforgettable and will be greatly missed. He was loved by all who knew him. On June 9, 1944 Richard married the former Judith Gibson who preceded him in death on April 5, 2001. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Marguerite Burkhead on July 15, 1993, and several brothers- and sisters-in-law who were a very important part of his life. Richard is survived by a daughter, Mary Jo Bay of Kalamazoo; a brother-in-law Dan Weirick of Kalamazoo; and many nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place and a private family memorial service will take place at a later date. Memorials may be directed to Heritage Community of Kalamazoo, Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan or the charity of one's choice. Arrangements were made by Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 South 9th Street.
