Passed away Thursday morning, November 26, 2015. Nelson was born January 3, 1930 in Kalamazoo the son of James and Fannie (Yzenbaard) Schippers and had been a lifelong resident in Kalamazoo. He was a veteran serving in the U.S. Army. Nelson was a member of Bethany Reformed Church and worked at Western Michigan University for 35 years until his retirement in 1999. On July 16, 1954 he was united in marriage to his loving wife of 61 years, the former Helen Taylor, who survives. He is also survived by his sons, Mike Schippers and Mark Schippers; sisters, Ruth (Richard) Haase, Shirley (Bob) McCarty; a sister-in-law, Ann Schippers; and numerous nieces and nephews. Nelson was preceded in death by 3 brothers and a sister, Adrian, James, Robert, and Louise. Friends may meet the family Monday, November 30 from 6-8pm at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 South 9th Street where funeral services will be held at 11:00am Tuesday, December 1. Interment will follow in Mt. Ever-Rest Cemetery at 12:00pm in which all friends are invited to attend with the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Reverence Home Health and Hospice.
