Of Kalamazoo, MI Died Sunday, August 11, 2013. Age 88. Martha was born on October 3, 1924 in Kalamazoo, MI, the daughter of the late Henry and Nellie Emaar VanTuyl. Martha graduated from Central High School and Western Michigan University. She was married to Jack R. Woods on June 13, 1947. Jack preceded her in death on January 31, 1991. Martha was employed by the former Upjohn Company as a cost accountant and received the Upjohn Award in 1984. She received the Holt Award from Hospice in 2002. After her retirement she became a Community Volunteer. She enjoyed working for Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan, Air Zoo Museum, Kalamazoo Free Clinic, Friends of the Library and the Kalamazoo Gospel Mission. Martha treasured her people relationships. Her faith held her close to her Bible. She participated in a Bible Study Group. Martha was a member of the Kalamazoo Symphony League, the Art League and the Ladies Library Association. Further, she was a strong member of Second Reformed Church where she served as an usher. Surviving are her sisters and brothers, Ruth Scheurwater, David VanTuyl, Wilma DeVries and Peter VanTuyl; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Cornelia Kabboord. She will be forever grateful to Lee and Joanna Schwenk, who were always there for her. There will be no visitation. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 14, 2013 at Second Reformed Church, 2323 Stadium Drive. Private interment will take place later in Mt. Ever-Rest Memorial Park, South. Memorial contributions may be made to Second Reformed Church or Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan.
