Passed away Sunday evening, March 24, 2019. Mabel was born March 28, 1920 in Huntington, IN the daughter of the late Henry and Della (Gottschock) Durkes. She graduated Cum Laude from Battle Creek Central High School in 1938. She started working for the U.S. Army during World War II and ended her career working as a medical staff secretary for Leila Hospital in Battle Creek. Mabel was a member of Greenwood Reformed Church, enjoyed traveling, reading, and spending time with her family and friends. She was a very social person who always had a smile and a kind word for all she came in contact with. Mabel was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Francis Robert Johnson in 1977. In 1986, she married Robert P. Slager who passed in 2013. She was also preceded in death by a son-in-laws, David Hodgden, and Micheal Manson; and a sister, Sarah Henney. Surviving are her children, Gary (Blythe) Johnson, Linda Hodgden, Karen Manson; step-children, Karen (Vince) Wheat, Ron Slager; 10 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. Friends may meet the family from 10-11:00am Wednesday, March 27 at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 South 9th Street where funeral services will follow at 11:00am. Following the service there will be a light luncheon in the Langeland Family Center. Private interment will be in Battle Creek Memorial Park.
