Johanna N. Niewoonder

January 17, 1932 — April 7, 2020

Johanna Niewoonder went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, April 7, 2020. She was born on January 17, 1932, the daughter of the late Joost and Alida (Slegers) VanderHorst. Johanna is survived by sons Mark (Amy), Ron (Nancy), Ed (Kay), and John (Kristin); grandchildren Katie (Pat) Zepp, Daniel, Ryan, Stephen, Maggie, Chad, Nate, David, Mitchell, Mariah, and Tristan; great-grandchildren Liam, Wesley, and Evangeline; sisters Anita (Paul) Ruimveld, Gert (Willard) Nieboer, sisters-in-law Wilma (Leo) VanderHorst and Barb (Phil) Nieboer. She was preceded in death by her husband Marvin; her parents; brothers Len VanderHorst, Jim (Carol) VanderHorst and Herb (Rennie) VanderHorst; an infant son and grandson. Johanna, along with her husband, owned and operated Niewoonder Landscaping and was a lifelong member of Second Christian Reformed Church of Kalamazoo. She volunteered at her church, the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee, Appalachia Reach Out and several other charities. Johanna was devoted to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and to her family and friends. She found great joy spending time with her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren attending many ball games and performances. She loved God's creation and spent countless hours outdoors at her home and up north in the woods and with her flowers. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to: Second Christian Reformed Church of Kalamazoo-Benevolence Fund or the Kalamazoo Gospel Mission. A private burial service will be held on Monday, April 13. In addition, a celebration of Johanna's life will occur at a later date.
